The beauty market in the Middle East is booming, with luxury fragrances contributing to this significant growth. Some of the biggest fragrance brands in the world have standalone stores here, such as Creed, Jo Malone, Amouage, Diptyque and I think Byredo are due to open a standalone store in Abu Dhabi. The point is, fragrance and smelling good is BIG business here, some brands even have special perfume designed for abayas and kandoras (female and male attire in the UAE). Even the malls are incensed with that signature Oud scent as soon as the AC hits you. So, all this in mind, it makes perfect sense for a brand I have never heard of before to launch here in the UAE before London.
Comptoir Sud Pacifique was created in the 70’s by a couple who took inspiration from their travels to create collections of fragrances. More recently, the charming Valerie Pianelli took over the brand and continued the philosophy the brand was founded upon.
The latest collection ‘Voyages en Orient’ (and my first experience with the brand) is made up of five fragrances to reflect a real journey through the Middle East. From the Mediterranean sea shores at the gates of Istanbul to ends at the borders of Arabia, each fragrance is completely unique, but unlike other fragrance houses, you CAN mix the fragrances.
I tested all of them out and my favourites are;
Jasmin Poudre – my FAVOURITE! I love Jasmine, but this is SPECIAL! With notes of Amber and Musk, it is not over flowery and feminine.
Epices Sultanes – Initially releasing notes of dried fruits, it settles with spices, vanilla and oudh. I must add, the one spritz on my forearm lasted well into the early hours of the morning.
Also in the range;
Oudh Sensuel – Spices and musk notes make this a powerful scent.
Oudh Intense – Very rich with floral scents and woody notes.
Bois Royal – Green yet intense with top notes of wood.
The full Comptoir Sud Pacifique range is available from Atelier Perfumery, Galleria Mall, Al Wasl Road, Jumeirah.
I must add that the Galleria Mall is my favourite so far! It’s not hectic, it’s got a cool, chilled vibe with some great boutiques. There is also the BEST salon there called ‘Soh Dubai’ – go and check it out if you’re there.
